About the Book

The Voice of Reason is a collection of columns written over the years by one of Nigeria’s renowned journalists Kola Animasaun. The doyen of Nigerian journalism Alade Odunewu (Allah-de) gives the best testimony to the genius of Animasaun when he says: “I read Kola Animasaun every week. His column does what a good column should do – take on all manner of people as well as all manner of subjects, from the sublime to the ridiculous. As I myself attempted to do decades ago, the column is about men and matters; it is history; it is about politicians, morality; about religion, government and the governed, about the endless struggle between the powerful and the weak; about man’s inhumanity to man; about class divide; about those strange elements you can find in George Orwell’s 1984 – the Minister of Public Enlightenment and Information, who specialises in ignorance and voodooism; about Big Brother watching over your shoulder; about the agency established to provide electricity, but which specialises in throwing the nation into utter darkness; about epileptic telephone.”

About the Author

Kola Muslim Adio Animasaun was born on July 5 1939, at Agbado Station, Ogun State, Nigeria.  He was educated at Abeokuta Grammar School, the London Institute of World Affairs and the prestigious Regent Street Polytechnic, London (now University of Westminster). Kola, as he is popularly known, cut his journalistic teeth on The Truth, the Ahmadiyya Muslim weekly. He has worked as Foreign Editor, Daily Listener, Monrovia, Liberia 1963; Production News Editor, Nigerian Tribune, 1963 – 1964; reporter, Daily Sketch, 1964; Chief Sub-Editor, Daily Express, 1961, 1964 - 65; Senior Information Officer, Federal Ministry of Information, 1965 – 77, from where he was seconded to the National Provident Fund and later to the Nigerian Embassy in Sweden as First Secretary. At different times, Animasaun has written a column in the Evening Times, Nigerian Herald, Daily Express and Weekly Focus. He packs a lot of humour, insight and candour into his racy style. This book is a compelling read for all.
