Russia Lifts The Weapons Embargo On Iran
Vladimir Putin, the president of the Russian Federation has lifted the ban that was holding back the delivery of S-300 missile air defense systems to Iran, stated the official press service of the Kremlin. The ban was introduced in 2010, by the Russian president at the time, Dmitry Medvedev.
The document was accompanied by the note explaining the lift of the ban. “The decree lifts the ban on transit through Russian territory, including airlift, and the export from the Russian Federation to the Islamic Republic of Iran, and also the transfer to the Islamic Republic of Iran outside the territory of the Russian Federation, both by sea and by air, of air defense missile systems S-300.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov said that the imposed embargo on the S-300 missile air defense systems, was no longer needed, as the official Tehran reached a framework agreement with the representatives of the six major world powers, regarding the country’s nuclear program.
The decision wasn’t welcomed by some officials, with Yuval Steinitz, the Intelligence Minister of Israel expressing concern on Monday. “This is a direct result of the legitimacy that Iran is receiving from the nuclear deal that is being prepared, and proof that the Iranian economic growth which follows the lifting of sanctions will be exploited for arming itself and not for the welfare of the Iranian people,“said Steinitz.
