Chris Ajaero, assistant general editor, is not from the South-South geopolitical zone. But he knows a lot about the place. He had worked as an assistant editor at the now defunct Sunray Newspapers based in Port-Harcourt then. His stint at the newspapers had provided the foundation of his love for Port-Harcourt and the Niger Delta generally. Every story that has something to do with that region normally excites him because he has contacts that can always make his efforts very productive. It was for the same reason that this week’s cover story was assigned to him. Ajaero has done many political stories in which President Goodluck Jonathan had featured. But his South- South contacts were also required this time because the story is also about the childhood of Jonathan and it required somebody with a good knowledge of the South- South and who has contacts. He has proved the editorial board’s decision right. Ajaero went to Bayelsa State and came back within a short time with good details on the early life of President Jonathan. That report has helped our cover story on the president this week. The story also examines the president’s decision to run for the presidency in 2011, the support he is receiving as well as the opposition against him. Our reporters in Abuja sought out some prominent Northern political leaders and spoke to them on the Northern position, especially, the insistence that it’s the turn of the North to produce the next president of the country in 2011. How will this affect Jonathan’s campaign and what is being done by those in his camp to woo support for him? Will luck still smile at Goodluck Jonathan this time around? All these and more are part of this week’s cover story which we have called: The Good Luck of Jonathan anchored by Ajaero |
