Danladi Baido, former Taraba State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, appears set to clinch the People's Democratic Party, PDP gubernatorial ticket for the state

By Victor Ugborgu

Danladi Baido, former commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, is determined to clinch the People's Democratic Party, PDP's gubernatorial ticket for Taraba State.

Baido has been enjoying a good relationship with Jolly Nyame, governor of the state and also the goodwill of the people over the years. He is seen in Taraba State as the anointed son of the governor.

Baido even confirmed it when he said: " A lot of people appreciate me in Taraba State due to my association with Jolly Nyame. Our association has helped me to gain experience in politics. I have a relationship with the masses, the rich, the poor and people at all levels. This is why I am sure of clinching the PDP ticket in the primaries scheduled for December 9."

He said his position as commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and later Finance had helped him to learn the workings of government, appreciate the aspirations of the people and how best to meet those aspirations. "I have learnt how to relate with the public and government officials. I know the workings of the state executive council, its relationship with the legislature, judiciary, corporate bodies and opposition groups. I have learnt so much from Nyame and I am ready to continue to learn more so as to be the people's gov-ernor, who would be accessible, tolerant, dutiful and visionary," he said.

Baido said his gubernatorial ambition was hinged on three major factors aimed at improving on the achievements of Nyame. His tripod includes construction, composition and consolidation. "My focus shall be the provision of the most essential human needs through an integrated programme with a development framework over a targeted period of time. Where the governor has done much I will consolidate, where he has constructed, I will compose and where there is need for construction, I will do it. I shall develop a framework which will guide my programmes, with my ultimate target being the overall development of Taraba State to meet the aspirations of our people," he said.

But it might not be as easy as that. There are more than 12 aspirants in the PDP who also enjoy the people's support. Taraba State has many ethnic groups with diverse political and religious backgrounds. In the last few years, the state was bedevilled with crises, which consumed many lives. It was during the era of Nyame that peace was restored.
